Modern Horizons 3 made expensive stuff, cheap!

Weekly Recs

Highlighting five cards that could be worth picking up. (Note: These are sent to subscribers first and then posted a week later)

The Medallion Cycle

1 year ago: $10-$40

Today: $1-$2.50

(Ok I'm cheating a bit, I'm grouping these into one slot.) Medallions reduce the cost of every spell, of their respected color, by one.

These are excellent ramp spells and should go in any mono colored deck. I'd even slot these into two color decks (maybe even three?) depending upon the color distribution. These are staples that will always be valuable to own and powerful in the right decks.

Fury

1 year ago: $35

Today: $3.50

Fury was once a modern staple until it was banned. Even so, it's still a solid removal spell in mono red commander decks. As the game speeds up, commanders are getting lower costed but also lower stat lines. Four damage can take out most commanders and a lot of early turn creature ramp (e.g. Llanowar elves). Free spells are always going to be good, so being able to pitch another red card to deal four damage is not nothing.

Allied Fetchlands

(Ok I'm cheating again, but with Modern Horizons 3 bringing so many spicy reprints now is a great time to get them.)

1 year ago: $30-$40

Today: $8-$15

When it comes to the best lands in EDH, fetchlands are up there. They allow you fix your mana in the best way possibly by allowing you to choose which colors of mana, that you need to get, at just the right moment. They also are beneficial in decks that want:

  • Cards in the graveyard
  • Multiple landfall triggers
  • Sacrificing permanents

There is going to be so much Modern Horizons 3 product opened up that these are going to stay low for a long time. Regardless, I doubt they're going to fall much lower than they are today, because everyone needs them for their decks.

Breya, Etherium Shaper

1 year ago: $6

Today: $0.25

Breya is a classic artifact/aristocrats commander. She is very toolbox-y and you can build her in many ways. Being in four colors allows you to pack in all of the artifact goodness, making her extremely powerful. I think she's a cool commander to build once, but then when you start to optimize her, she becomes insanely good and may become "too" strong for a lot of tables. But then again, we're here to build cheap, competitive decks, and Breya fits that bill!

Priest of Titania

1 year ago: $5

Today: $0.10

Priest of Titania is the classic mana dork in one of the most classic archetypal decks: elves. Play a Llanowar Elves on turn 1, play Priest on turn 2, and then on turn three you'll untap with five mana. It's sad that it took them so long to reprint this card, but hey I'll take it!

End step

Did you notice a trend this week in the cards I chose? They were all from Modern Horizons 3 (or in Fury's case, it was reprinted as a Special Guest, adding more copies to the market thereby increasing supply overall). I really love when a set comes out that increases the supply of staples, thus driving price down, and is able to satiate demand.
