Weekly Recs

Highlighting five cards that could be worth picking up. (Note: These are sent to subscribers first and then posted a week later)

Ripples of Undeath

1 year ago - N/A

Today: $2

When Ripples of Undeath was previewed, people were comparing it to Sylvan Library because it's a 2 mana spell that consistently lets you look at, and optionally keep, more cards every turn. This card is severely underrated, as it's essentially a "pay 1 mana + 3 life: draw 1 card AND put 2 cards into your graveyard." The graveyard is often an extension of the hand in the right deck. Self-mill decks, helmed by the likes of The Mycotyrant or Sidisi, Brood Tyrant, should consider this card as both card draw and mill.

Types of decks to put it in

  • Graveyard/Reanimator/Mill

Toxic Deluge

1 year ago - $17

Today: $4

Is Toxic Deluge the best black board wipe? Some would argue yes. At just 3 mana, it's an extremely efficient removal spell. That being said, you do have to pay life, but in EDH your 40 life is just another resource. Another reason why it's so good is that this gives -X/-X to creatures, meaning it gets around indestructible. Also, because you get to choose the amount of life, it could be a one-sided board wipe in your favor. Do your opponents have a bunch of 1/1 creature tokens the lowest you have is a 3/3? Just pay 1 life and dash their hopes.

Types of decks to put it in

  • Any deck with black
  • Lifegain/life as a resource

Chitterspitter

1 year ago - $0.50

Today: $0.50

Bloomburrow is just weeks away, meaning squirrels are back on the menu, boys! Chitterspitter is an extremely unassuming card. It does not do anything amazing when you play it, which actually can work to your advantage as your opponents. In my Chatterfang, Squirrel General deck, this became a late game problem for my opponents since their enchantment removal was focused on more impactful-looking cards (e.g. Rhystic Study). By the time it got to turn 8, it pumped my squirrel army by at least +5/+5! I'd pick this one up to add to any squirrel deck you'll be building from Bloomburrow.

Types of decks to put it in

  • Squirrel tribal

Nut Collector

1 year ago - $5

Today: $0.75

Similarly, Nut Collector is another card that you can put into squirrel decks when Bloomburrow releases. Squirrels are often in black and green, which is a great pairing to be able to get things into the graveyard, so threshold will not be a problem. Plus, it makes a squirrel every turn.

Types of decks to put it in

  • Squirrel tribal

Proft's Eidetic Memory

1 year ago - N/A

Today: $2

This rec actually comes from a guy in my playgroup. He has a Xyris, the Writhing Storm deck where the goal is draw a TON of cards and make a TON of snakes that either swing in for damage or just kill you on entering with cards like Impact Tremors. He added this card because it pumps Xyris for every card you've drawn before combat. Start your turn by playing a Windfall or other cheap wheel, which makes snakes off of your opponents drawing. Proft's Eidetic Memory then pumps Xyris to something like a 10/15. Swing with Xyris, make 10 more snakes, and there's a potential for 30+ snakes in a single turn!

Types of decks to put it in

  • Card draw
  • +1/+1 counters

End step

This week's recs can be summarized very easily:

  1. Modern Horizons 3 has some absolute banger cards that you should pick up while the market is being flooded with singles.
  2. Squirrels are about to be everywhere, so pick up any cheap cards now before they explode in popularity.
  3. Drawing cards is fun!
