Prepare for the house of horrors in Duskmourn

Weekly Recs

Highlighting five cards that could be worth picking up. (Note: These are sent to subscribers first and then posted a week later)

Herald of Slaanesh

1 year ago - $1.02

Today: $3.52

Any card that is an auto-include for a specific tribe, and has had only one printing, is ripe to see a spike in demand anytime new cards, for that tribe, are released. With Duskmourn spoilers ongoing, there are some spicy new demons to either helm a commander deck or to slot into existing ones. Herald of Slaanesh makes all demons cheaper to cast, which is extremely important for a tribe where creatures traditionally have a high mana value. Giving them haste is an underrated aspect of this card as well, allowing them to swing in immediately.

And who knows when they will be able to reprint Herald of Slaanesh from Warhammer, so pick one up now on the cheap!

Anikthea, Hand of Erebos

1 year ago - N/A

Today: $0.48

Commander Masters came and went very quickly because of the high price tag. Anikthea, Hand of Erebos should be played more often than she is for how strong she can be. Reanimating a powerful enchantment from your graveyard each turn can get out of hand when you add in token doublers. The reason why I am including her on this list is the prevalence of enchantments coming in Duskmourn.

Unfortunately, she does not "cheat" into play cards with the new Room mechanic, as when those copies enter you still have to pay the unlock cost. Even so, some of the rooms are busted. Awakening Hall is a one sided Rise of the Dark Realms.

  • Abzan enchantress

Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer

1 year ago - $0.28

Today: $0.20

It is not hyperbole to say that Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer is the best morph/manifest/cloak/disguise commander of all time. Built in cost reduction AND card draw makes this snake wizard an instant engine. The manifest dread mechanic from Duskmourn is the new variant of being able to place creatures onto the field face down. In the new commander decks, there will likely be plenty of support for facedown creatures as well since the face commander, Zimone, Mystery Unraveler, has to do with manifesting dread.

Trail of Mystery

1 year ago - $0.11

Today: $0.17

Speaking of the new Zimone, Myster Unraveler, she triggers her manifest dread ability off of a land entering the battlefield. To keep your hand stocked with lands, Trail of Mystery allows you to tutor for one each time a face down creature enters your battlefield.

If you have ever played with, or against, a face down creatures deck, the combat step is always a surprise. You attack with a 2/2 manifested creature and your opponent does not block, expecting to take 2 damage. Then, you flip into a massive beater. Giving it +2/+2 only adds to the pain your opponents take!

Aphetto Runecaster

1 year ago - $0.24

Today: $0.54

Cards like Aphetto Runecaster are from a bygone era, before everything read "once per turn." In a morph deck, you should be turning creatures face up quite often, so with this card on board you will easily be able to refuel your hand. Aphetto Runecaster spiked to roughly $5 when the Commander 19 product was released, containing the Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer precon. I could see this card spiking once again with Duskmourn on the horizon.

End step

Duskmourn looks to be a pretty interesting set, full of enchantments, face down creatures, and horror-creature support. Morph (and its variants) has always been one of my favorite mechanics because of the surprise factor. I am excited to rebuild Kadena and add in the manifest dread cards. Or maybe you are excited to build demon tribal, in which case look at the other demon cards released in the Warhammer 40k precons. If you love enchantress, the new rooms could add both short and long term value to your board. There is lots of fun new stuff for everyone!
