Weekly Recs
Highlighting five cards that could be worth picking up. (Note: These are sent to subscribers first and then posted a week later)
Sedgemoor Witch
1 year ago - $1.64
Today: $1.90
Every time I see Sedgemoor Witch played, it quickly becomes a lightning rod for removal due to the value it generates as you cast instant and sorcery spells. Because spellslinger decks can be creature light, creating a 1/1 pest that blocks and gains you 1 life is very underrated. Heck, I'd even consider slotting this mono black good stuff deck to take advantage of the naturally good suite of removal and tutor spells.
Why I am considering purchasing it
- I am in the process of building a mono black deck and it is just a generically powerful card
Malevolent Hermit
1 year ago - $0.69
Today: $0.53
I have been searching, in stores, for a copy of Malevolent Hermit for quite some time but recently broke down and bought one online. It is a creature version of Miscast that can also hit enchantments and artifacts (sure, Battles too, but who plays those). It also has sacrifice synergies. What I love about the hermit over the other cards is its backside. Being able to cast it from the graveyard, for its disturb cost, and getting a card that stops counter magic is great value. I am surprised this value creature does not see more play!
Why I am considering purchasing it
- A body that also counters spells
Noxious Ghoul
1 year ago - $4.04
Today: $1.60
When the Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver precon was released, this card shot up in value. It has seen a few reprints (the List and a secret lair) and has since come back down in price.
Side note: If you are building a deck based off a new precon commander and miss the initial rush to buy synergistic cards, wait a few weeks or months until people move on and the price comes back down.
This is a board wipe on a stick for any Zombie deck. If you are going the hipster route and have a tribal tribal deck with lots of changelings, you can try slotting it in there, as well. Zombies is a tribe that WOTC will always return to, so it would not hurt to pick one up to keep for the future.
Why I am considering purchasing it
- I am building an esper aristocrats with The Ever-Changing 'Dane as the commander, and zombies are great at making tokens.
Vindictive Flamestoker
1 year ago - $0.16
Today: $0.10
I have a Loot, the Key to Everything deck and came across this card that would be a sweet addition. The goal is storm off by casting a bunch of instants and sorceries, which exile more instants and sorceries, all the while draining opponents with something like Guttersnipe.
Normally, I hate parasitic mechanics, like oil counters, where they tend to only work with other cards from the set. In this case, it is very easy, in a storm deck, to cast enough noncreature spells where Vindictive Flamestoker's activated ability costs just 1 red. Its ability to draw you four more cards allows you to continue your storm.
Why I am considering purchasing it
- Extra card draw for Loot, the Key to Everything that is also a blocker at worst
Blade Historian
1 year ago - $2.74
Today: $1.46
Blade Historian is another card I've longed to find in a store. It is vastly underrated, and perhaps does not see play due to its 4 Boros hybrid pips. Giving ALL of your attacking creatures double strike is nuts and a great way to press your advantage. Maybe Blade Historian can even be a finisher where you have built up enough of an army, either through lots of token creatures or big, trampling creatures, and just need to get enough damage in over any blockers.
Why I am considering purchasing it
- A finisher in my aggro heavy decks
End step
One thing I like to do is add cards to a wishlist when a new set comes out, regardless of price. I use Moxfield specifically, but there are plenty of other solutions out there! All of these cards have been on my wishlist at some point and, using Noxious Ghoul as an example, are cards where I have watched the price consider when it makes sense to purchase them.
The point is, keep track of cards you want because who knows, in a few weeks, months, or even years, you may a) notice that a card dropped in price and b) it would be perfect for the deck you want to build.
