Undervalued and underplayed cards of the week

Weekly Recs

Highlighting five cards that could be worth picking up. (Note: These are sent to subscribers first and then posted a week later)

Forensic Gadgeteer

1 year ago - N/A

Today: $0.89

The text on Forensic Gadgeteer alternately says "foods and clues cost 1 mana to activate." The gadgeteer is great in decks that produce tons of these tokens, although there are very few cards in blue that deal with foods.

I think the first line of text is often overlooked, too. If you are playing tons of cheap artifacts where the number on your board matters to something like Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge, it basically doubles the amount of artifacts. And the clues are card draw in a pinch. This card is so versatile!

Darkstar Augur

1 year ago - N/A

Today: $0.56

Dark Confidant used to be a staple in commander, yet sadly is not as widely played anymore. Darkstar Augur is a slightly more mana expensive version but has the upside of being a flying body that can optionally create a copy of itself when it enters. Is two Dark Confidants for 4 mana worth it?

You will have to be careful though because your life total can dwindle quickly, which is why I would only put this in a lifegain deck. Even still, having an updated version of Dark Confidant is fun!

Types of decks to put it in

  • Lifegain
  • Tokens

Priest of Fell Rites

1 year ago - $0.26

Today: $0.35

2 mana and 3 life to reanimate anything? Sign me up! Priest of Fell Rites is unassuming because it does not activate immediately and is only playable in decks with Orzhov colors. But what is great is the ability to play it again from your graveyard. It also fixes the feels bad that can happen when an opponent mills Priest of Fell Rites or makes you discard it from your hand.

Types of decks to put it in

  • Reanimator

Roshan, Hidden Magister

1 year ago - N/A

Today: $0.07

Roshan, Hidden Magister is another great card draw engine for Zimone, Mystery Unraveler or Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer. I can see this card being a banger in any morph deck, but due to the low printing and opening of Assassin's Creed it just may not see much adoption just because people do not know about it.

Oh, and it gives your face-down creatures menace? That just helps when you attack with a big, face down beater that you then flip up and take out two of their blockers.

Types of decks to put it in

  • Assassins
  • Morph/Cloak/Manifest

Stormsplitter

1 year ago - N/A

Today: $4.24

Stormsplitter fits in with decks looking to storm off. I previously built a Loot, the Key to Everything deck that I am going to try slotting this into. You can easily cast 10-15 spells in turn, making this grow exponential, kind of like Scute Swarm. It fits in even better in decks where you can give your creatures Prowess, pumping them for every instant or sorcery you cast. I could see this card dropping in price as Bloomburrow fades into the rear view, so it could be a fun pickup on the cheap in a month.

Types of decks to put it in

  • Spellslinger
  • Storm

End step

The overwhelming speed and quantity of sets has an upside! Some really interesting and unique cards are very, very cheap. I like that WOTC is printing less generically good cards and more cards that are very good in only certain strategies. This makes it easy to pickup and build decks based around a niche theme.
